Charleston
South Carolina
This overnight field trip introduces students to one of the oldest and most historic cities in America. Located in the heart of the city is the Charleston Museum, the oldest museum in America, housing one of America’s finest Civil War collections as well as extensive natural history exhibits. A 45 minute ferry ride, including a narrated harbor tour, continues the Civil War theme with a self guided tour of Fort Sumter introduced by National Park Service rangers. For an investigation of more recent American history, a visit to Patriot’s Point provides students an extensive tour of the U.S.S. Yorktown (the second) aircraft carrier* and a World War II vintage submarine. For an educational evening activity, we offer a “Haunted Legends” walking tour.
While in Charleston, you may opt to include an Historic District walking tour, a visit to Boone Hall Plantation, a guided Barrier Island Ecological Program, a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium featuring fresh and salt water exhibits, attend a Charleston Riverdogs baseball game (pending schedule) and time for souvenir shopping at the Historic City Market (priceless!).
* An overnight stay aboard the Yorktown includes three meals aboard the ship, a guided tour of the aircraft exhibits and facilities aboard ship, several vintage films and self guided tours of the other vessels positioned at Patriot’s Point and a visit to Fort Sumter.
